While visually faint, this nebula is stunning in time exposures, and to some, looks like a silhouette of Jesus holding a small child.At magnitude 4.5, the Christmas Tree Cluster (NGC 2264) is easy enough to see with your unaided eye in dark sky. And it jumps right out in binoculars. But amazingly, the cluster was never included in the Messier list, and remained overlooked by modern stargazers. It was left to William Herschel to first catalog this cluster in 1784. At first, he only saw the stars. Upon a second look, on the day after Christmas in 1785, he first noted the faint nebulosity near the cluster's brightest star. Officially, NGC 2264 includes both star cluster and nebula.
